Copy of La Bala Hardtop Prototyping - Early Mock Up Phase
Work has finally begun on the La Bala 3 piece removable Targa top system. The first step towards making the finished fiberglass product is to create a plug from which to pull molds. First I mock up the desired shape using cardboard, foam and tape. That shape is shown in this video. Once I have a shape I like I'll tape over all the foam, cover the car completely with plastic sheeting to protect the paint and lay up 2 layers of glass fiber mat to preserve the basic shape seen in this video. The pieces will be reinforced from behind to prevent warping and then removed from the car to be worked on more completely.
The 3 pieces are the front Targa top section, the center rollbar cover and the...

Brown's Ranch - Magical Green in the Desert
Просмотров 967 лет назад
This is the Cholla Loop Trail at Brown's Ranch in North Scottsdale, Arizona. This is the southwest desert, but early spring rains have made this place as green as we've ever seen it. Using my phone camera, I rode uphill on this section holding the camera in one hand. Apologies as it's really shaky video.
Hot pressing stainless nut-serts into 3D printed ABS plastic
Просмотров 4,5 тыс.9 лет назад
How I used a drill press and a spare 3D printer hotend to create a hot-insert press for 5mm stainless press-inserts. This quick and dirty hot-press makes it easy to properly align the nut-serts into ABS plastic. The nut-serts are M5x.8 18-8 stainless part number 92398A125 from McMaster Carr. I had been using a torch, a 5mm screw and an allen wrench to insert these, but getting the nut-serts to ...

It was bought out and renamed as Uforia Star Fighter Kit Car with no existing plans to actually build but they have the molds for the body design in Tennessee. Frame is pretty basic square tube mig welded from when I remember witnessing it at Carlisle, PA Kit car show over 10 years ago. You could shave weight and increase rigidity by converting it to round tube but that's a nightmare I'd rather avoid as the original plans IIRC had all the cut marks that you could print to tape onto your metal pieces as a guide.

Correct me if I've got the wrong end of the stick but a DeDion tube allows the two sides of the suspension to move up and down independently whilst keeping the wheels parallel utilising a bearing between the two sides. What you seem to show is nothing more than, effectively, a live axel, or even a very stiff torque tube, setup?

To diagnose for worn out rod bearings. Remove battery terminals and all spark plugs. Insert long screw driver (at least 2 feet long) into spark plug hole #1. You do not want to drop anything into those holes, so cover the rest. Turn piston #1 to tdc by turning crank manually, turn crank a tiny bit more until you see screw driver dropping by a few milimeters. Push down on screw driver for piston play. Check for play on piston #4. Do the same for pistons 2 and 3. If any downward piston play while pushing on screw driver. You'll need to remove oil pan components and check bottom end for worn out bearings. Parts are not cheap, I'd recommend going to a car yard and get $2 bearings. Stock 20v uses same bearings used on 16v 4age.

i think the 10-30 microns inconsistency are so good compare to inductive sensor, but then again you are doing it too fast, i think you can achieve better accuracy if u slow it down, just a thought. Now i am thinking of 3 vertical spring on the hotend holder against the carriage instead of hinge like u did so that during printing - there wont be any x or y displacement of the nozzle when it drags on the previous layer of the printed material. Then i am not so creative on designs,if you can implement this i would love to see a video. Then again, this is 4 year old stuff for u, i am sure you have a well working design by now.

It would be mutch easier if you extrude it measure you're lenght. Note that lenght retract it and calculate the new steps like: (expected mm : real mm) x old steps After 3-4 times doing this exactly you will be end like 99,999999% exactly.

Microstepping doesn't improve resolution much, if any. It's actually for noise reduction, rather than resolution. Even at full steps you're laying down plastic at 0.3mm per step, which is about the same size as your nozzel head. You might get a tiny bit of "globbing" at full stepping if your extruder steps don't sync up quite perfectly with your XYZ steps, but that will pretty much go away if you drop it down to 1/2 stepping or 1/4 stepping. Microstepping also DRASTICALLY reduces torque. A at 1/16 stepping the motor has only 10% the torque it has at full stepping. 1/32 it's like 6%. However, run a stepper motor at full steps and they are LOUD. People play music with them, just the motors turning, they are so loud. You remember those old dot matrix printers? That noise was 100% because they were running stepper motors of similar size to NEMA 17s with no microstepping. That's where microstepping helps a TON. The more microstepping, the quieter the motor runs, so 1/32 stepping will be significantly quieter than 1/16, which is far quieter than full stepping.

I have been trying to find a good print program for my tablet and I did see someone who was selling a tablet with a program installed, it's called Matter control. As I already have a tablet don't need to buy another tablet just for the program, not at $299, and that my tablet looks uncanily the same as what they use, and that they are not giving it away or even selling the program separate for a tablet, but do give away for free the PC version and I think they might even have it for mac as well, but don't quote me on that they have a mac version,,lol. I have been using it for my PC, as the Repetier with slic3r can be a bit crap, as I have noticed after slicing that the part on the screen has cracks in in, and this leads me to believe the part could then be badly sliced, and that water tight integrity is really bad as well with Repetier bundled with slic3r

Hi Steve, I've enjoyed your videos greatly, thanks. Two and a half years after you posted this video, do you still favor the filament drive ahead of the toothed-belt alternative? And for that matter, would you still build a delta in preference to a cartesian or other type? Thanks again.

    • @SteveGraber
      @SteveGraber 9 лет назад

+John Colvin - All of my recent printer designs have been belt driven. A good quality belt is a critical component of the drive system. The filament drive works pretty well. However the spectra does stretch continuously over time so it's not as trouble free as belts, also although the spectra drive is significantly more quiet in operation, it's also much more difficult to string up the printer with spectra vs just slapping some belts on and forgetting about them.

"Repedier" lmao, its Repetier kiddo, sound it out lol. Also for those of u who are saying kiss is better than slic3r, heres a tip, take these settings and transfer them over to Slic3r, then tell me kiss is better lol. If you don't know how to dial in a printer, and have failed to calibrate it yet, than ya, its gonna suck, but its the user not the machine or software. If you really wanna see some crazy fancy / technical prints, go learn skeinforge and set it up for your printer. Most people hate it because its too hard, but its a badass slicer, you can do things like set a .25 inner layer and .1 outter shell, rotate infill in the X axis, make an ooze tower, set layer path to go outside of the island so none of the internals ever get hit. Its way better than any of the "Do it for me" slicers. You better study thermodynamics and your material, and It wouldn't hurt to look up some physics force equations in relation to viscosity and acceleration. I spent 11 years in grad school and I still find it to be a challenge. I need a calculator and digital caliper at all times. And a spatula to follow behind the extruder on first layers.
